What do you teach?
We teach Kodokan Judo. This is a Japanese martial art that started in the 1880's. The goal is to throw and subdue someone but not harming them if possible. One of the main ways of doing this is using the most efficient method while using the least amount of energy. Using proper judo techniques, a smaller person can effectively throw a larger, unskilled person.
Our kid's classes teach the basics of judo and different ways of moving by playing games and simplistic drills. We emphasize listening to instructions and taking care of our fellow judoka.
The intermediate class follows similar training as the adults but with more intensity and a focus on competition. Judoka in this class don't have to compete but will learn how to do so.
The adult class starts with a good warm up and ukemi (break falls) before learning
The kata class on Sundays is where we learn the different prearranged forms of judo. Each has their different focus. Usually this is something that a judoka starts after a few years of general study. This is where you may see techniques that are not legal in competition but have practical applications.

How do I get a gi?
All students are responsible to buy a gi. It doesn't have to be new but must fit well and be clean and free of tears.
How do you get graded?
There are three principal factors for grading:
1) time in rank and attendance
2) attitude
3) skills you needed to know
We're following Judo Canada's 2021 grading syllabus. We also use a stripe system for our youngest judoka.
Who started judo?
Professor Jigoro Kano (also Kanō Jigorō). He's the guy in the picture at the dojo.
Why all the bowing?
As we are a Japanese martial art, we use a lot of Japanese customs. It's used as a sign of respect to the person you're bowing to. At the beginning of class, you'll hear the head student call out three bows: "sensei ni rei" which is bowing to the teachers/instructors, "Kano ni rei" which is where we show respect for the founder of judo, and "shomen ni rei"
How do I tell if a gi fits?
The jacket should overlap in the front like a bath robe. The sleeves should come up to the wrists when the arms are extended out to the front.
How do you wear a gi / How do you tie the belt?
